SnowYogi chaletThe Chalet: Chalet Montperron

The venue for SnowYogi 2011 is still in La Rosiere, the French Alps but in a new location.  For 2011 we are  using chalet Montperron. Over 150 years old, it is perched on the cliff edge looking out over the Tarantaise valley with 180 degrees view.  Burnt wood and classic Baroque stone are the most stunning features with many of the main load bearing beams visible.  The views from most of the rooms looks across to Les Arcs and St. Foy and down onto Bourg St. Maurice, or Vegas as some people call it at night, quite a sight! Montperron offers plenty of space to dine, sleep, relax, practice yoga.  With a selection of room sizes & styles, we are able to offer a large range of accommodation to suit all tastes.

Unwind here, away from the hubbub of the world and truly engage with your surroundings and the nature of the Alps. With uninterrupted views of the mountains and no neighbours, it is the ideal location for a mountain retreat and we can assure you that your stay with us here, will be an adventure to remember.

A Typical Day at Montperron

Begin your day the yogi way: Morning class in the mountains – will be an hour class – to wake up that cold stiff body and get you ready for the slopes. The morning sessions are a more dynamic practice with an emphasis on standing postures as we open up, warm and strengthen the body in preparation for a day of adventure! Special focus is on the legs, to build stamina for those turns.

Wind down the yogi way: The evening class is gentle yoga to stretch out and relax abused muscles and joints. The session will vary and we’ll include pranayama & meditation to really let go and enter a state of deep relaxation. After yoga perhaps book a massage to really pamper yourself or those who wish, can enjoy a good glass of wine before dinner in front of the fire!

There will be 4 morning yoga classes lasting for 1 hour to awaken your sleepy body in preparation for a day on the mountain.  There will be 5 evening yoga classes lasting 1 and a half hours to calm the mind and lengthen tired muscles from physical exercise that your body is not used to. Active in relaxtion in an essential part of our ethos too!

The Ski Area of La Rosiere

In the heart of the Haute-Tarentaise, at 1850 m above sea level, on a “balcony” facing due South, La Rosière is a friendly resort built respecting mountain architectural traditions.

Linked with La Thuile in Italy, it is the only Savoyard resort to offer an international ski area of 150 km pisted runs: “L’Espace San Bernardo“. The savours of the Italian food for a well earned lunch or the magic of heliskiing will help you enjoy the thrills of snowboarding without borders.

With the famous resorts of St Foy, Val D’Isere, Tignes & Les Arcs all within 40 minutes drive from the chalet –it means we have infinite ski areas to offer you. Every level is amply provided for. Whether you want to ski gently through stunning wooded pistes or carve up some clean lines in fresh powder, the ski areas around Montperron has it all.

Why combine Yoga with snowboarding/skiing?

Instead of a hot toddy, try yoga after a day on the mountain. Few sports marry the elements of speed and grace better than skiing and snowboarding. Combine the adrenaline rush of riding through a powder field on a sunny day and fresh turns with no-one around except you and the mountain, the sport’s broad appeal is evident. Far removed from these high-energy sports lies their opposite —yoga. Where snowboarding/skiing is fast and risky, yoga is slow and thoughtful. The three sports’ philosophies diverge, yet the physical demands of skiing/boarding call out for the counter movements of yoga.

Perhaps the biggest benefit yoga can bring to your snowboarding is injury prevention. Both skiing and snowboarding asks a lot from the body—cold muscles are called upon to perform a variety of functions, while dexterity, balance, and high levels of concentration are also a must. For those boarders who go up the mountain sporadically, these athletic requisites are often too tough, and they can end up injured and disillusioned with the sport. By observing your body’s imbalances, brought on by the particular movements of skiing, and employing a yoga program to bring your body into a state of equilibrium, you can avert injury and participate in the sport for years to come.

Here’s a Yoga Journal article on the benefits of yoga for skiiers (and boarders!)
